Take the First Step Toward Your HVAC Career Now!

How To Get Your First Job In HVAC

Once you've gained your HVAC certification, you're ready to start working and making money. It's an exciting first step! Here are three ways to improve your chances of landing your first job as an HVAC tech.

Consider an HVAC Apprenticeship

Just because you are certified doesn't mean you can't also benefit from an HVAC apprenticeship. Often, HVAC programs will let you get your certification through formal education or by completing an apprenticeship.

For technicians who took the formal education route, signing up for an apprenticeship can still be a great way to gain on-the-job training that can lead to employment. Some apprenticeships may even be paid positions.

Gain Relevant Heating and Cooling Experience

If an apprenticeship isn't for you, or if you've already completed one, you can consider other options for building your resume and gaining experience.

For example, you may consider moving away from traditional HVAC companies and go after a job that allows you to perform HVAC duties between other tasks. You could get started by applying for some apartment maintenance jobs in your area, you may be surprised at how easy these jobs are to come by when you have your certification.

From there, you can make use of your HVAC skills, and gain marketable credentials and experience along the way.

Check Your Driving Record

As you get some experience under your belt and prepare to go back out after an HVAC technician job, make sure to check your driving record. You can obtain an updated copy for a nominal fee through your state.

Many HVAC companies issue company vehicles, so they want their technicians to have clean driving records and valid driver's licenses. If you have points on your record, consider checking to see if you can have them removed by taking a driver's education course, safe driving class, or something similar. By doing so, you may be able to improve your chances of landing a job.

Job Hunting: it Gets Better with Experience

Obtaining your HVAC certification is a huge milestone when applying for your first job in HVAC. Once you do secure your first paid position, you should have an easier time finding employment later in your career. Experience, along with proper certification, makes you marketable and can help you advance in your career.
